Musings: Simple Moments.

I want to remember...

...sticky door knobs from marshmallow hands.
...jogging as the sun sets with my husband.
...watching a colony of ants with my boys.
...my third, perched on top of a stack of pillows, reading a book.
...my baby's first roasted marshmallow.
...picnic lunches in the yard.
...my third's frequent request: 'Mama, I sit on your lap?'
...listening to Anne of Green Gables together.
...teaching my first how to use a pastry blender.
...my baby tucking himself under a blanket whenever he sits.
...my second painting the coop with his hero.
...my baby's excitement over trains.
...seemingly endless June nights.
...my second's endless chatter whenever he's excited.
...cuddling with my boys at naptime.
...searching for wolf spiders in the yard after dark.
...watching the weekly progress of our coop being built.
...ending our Sunday night with a fresh Strawberry Rhubarb Pie.
...my baby falling asleep in my arms.

Musings: The Memory Keeper.

...

I recently recognized that in order to turn a blind eye to all the cleaning and organizing that never seems to be finished, I need to physically leave the house.

Last Summer was a bit of a blur and sometimes I try to think back twelve months and wonder to myself: What did I do all day?

Then I remember that my youngest was only eight months old at the time and, while my happiest moments in life are the ones that include one of my littles in my arms, I must admit to myself that a nursing baby under one year old makes everything just a little bit crazier - in the very best way of course - and is not the best time for accomplishing much aside from getting dressed and making dinner.

As I approach this new phase in life, the first time in over eight years that my body is not responsible for either growing or nourishing a babe, I pray for the grace to embrace with joy the opportunity I am being presented with to create memories that my children (and hopefully I ;) will remember for a lifetime, or at least one year from now!

With June's warm temperatures upon us and a vigorous school year ending, Summer is the perfect time for us to get away from our cozy homestead at least once a week for an adventure!

...

I wonder what it would be like to live a world where it was always June.

Inspiration: Roses in Bloom.

We needed some 'Auntie' time on Tuesday so, as much as I wanted to head directly home after doing our errands in town, I knew we'd all be happier if we made a fun little detour.

The Rose Garden was the perfect spot. Beautiful flowers and lush greenery. A large open field for us to run through and get all our energy out and a wooden outdoor stage for us to dance on and get all our giggles out. We all left feeling a little more joyful and a little more inspired.

I love that all of my boys have grown to love my sister as much as I do. She will always hold a special place in each of their hearts.

Life: A Day at the Lake.

Yesterday was, in essence, the perfect summer day.

Up before the sun to prepare my kitchen for the day... Walk with my littlest while watching the sun rise and chatting with my sis... On the road by mid-morning... Swim in the lake for hours... Head home tuckered out and sun-kissed... Dip in the pool to cool off... Wash up with baths and showers for all... Grill hot dogs and chicken... Fill those empty tummies... Watch the thunder/hail storm... Cuddle on the couch for a movie... Put my tired boys to bed... Iron a pile of dress shirts... Hang out with my husband... Curl up in my cozy bed... Asleep the moment my head hits the pillow...

Perfect way to end the month of May.

Life: Strawberry Rhubab Pie.

What better way to spend a rainy Sunday morning in May than by making a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with your three little boys?

What better way to spend a sunny Sunday evening in May than by devouring a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with your three little boys & one big boy?

Every year I forget just how much I love my Grandma's Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Then May comes along, rhubarb is finally in season again and I am reminded... and never disappointed.

Mmmm...

Life: May Day.

Welcome May, my favorite month of the year! My boys are certainly happy to celebrate your arrival with all the new life you bring: baby turtles, baby ducklings, and, of course, baby humans too!

Happy May Day!

Inspiration: Garden in Spring.

"Sping is the Period
Express from God.
Among the other seasons
Himself abide,

But during March and April
None stir abroad
Without a cordial interview
With God."

- Emily Dickinson

...

Along with April, Spring has arrived in all its glory, bringing with it warm temperatures, blooming flowers, and family visits. Not many things inspire me as much as the advent of Spring: the sound of birds chirping in the wee hours of the morning, the scent of hyaciths blooming just in time for our Risen Lord, the sight of fushia azealas blazing against the backdrop of lush green grass.

Happy Spring!

Cooking: Breakfast // Apple Cinnamon Cream of Millet.

Nothing brings my boys to the kitchen like the sound of our food processor whirring away! Since the day my youngest son was fed his first taste of solids a couple of months ago, my older two son's interest in everything he eats has not waned. They beg to try anything their baby brother is eating and I, being fully aware of the amount of nutrients I try to cram into each of those baby meals, am more than happy to oblige.

This Apple Spice Cream of Millet is the first breakfast cereal I feed to my babies. It is similar in consistency to Cream of Wheat and Gerber's Prepared Baby Cereals but since the millet is freshly ground, all the iron, protein and other vital nutrients it contains are maintained without the use of preservatives.

I have found that by adding fresh fruits and vegetables like grated apples or carrots and chopped spinach or kale to their breakfast cereals, I'm able to sneak some extra flavor and nutrients into my babies tummies first thing in the morning.

Growing up, my mom made Cream of Wheat for breakfast frequently. My favorite part was meticulously arranging the raisins and brown sugar on top to create a happy face. With so many different nuts, seeds, and dried fruits so widely available these days, my boys and I have a lot of fun each morning coming up with different, healthier variations on my traditional raisin and brown sugar happy face.

{Apple Spice Cream of Millet}

3 T. whole millet
3/4 c. coconut milk, unsweetened
1/2 apple, grated
fresh baby spinach leaves, finely chopped
1 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. nutmeg
1/4 t. all spice
a pinch of salt

Grind whole millet in a food processor using a milling blade until it is the consistency of flour. Bring almond milk and spinach leaves to a light boil over low heat. Add millet, 1 T. at a time while whisking continuously to avoid clumps. Add apple. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and let stand 1 -2 minutes until thickened. Add spices. Pour into bowls. If desired, sweeten with maple syrup or honey and top with fresh berries, chopped nuts and/or dried fruit.

makes 2 -3 servings.

{notes:}
*for babies 12 months & older, prepare as is;
*for babies 12 months & under, prepare as is & omit toppings;
*for babies 9 months & under, substitute coconut milk with water & omit apple & spinach;
*any dairy or plant based milk can be substituted for the coconut milk;

Shop: Damask & Polka Dots.

There is something about the soft pastels and delicate pattern of this Love Birds Damask fabric from Carousel Designs that just makes me want to have a baby girl. Backed with a polka dot decked flannel and I'm ready to design a whole nursery around this blanket.

I first made this blanket in the Summer of 2015 as a gift for my husband's cousin's new baby, a little girl named Lilly Grace. Elegant and preppy, but with a touch of eclectic, I thought this blanket suited her beautiful name quite nicely.

Once this baby blanket was wrapped up and delivered to its intended owner I quickly ordered more fabric and whipped up another one because I knew I wanted it for my shop. You can check out the listing for this Love Birds Damask/Pink Polka Dots Swaddle Receiving Blanket here.

And until the day God blesses me with a daughter of my own, I'll continue to come up with the girliest blankets I can envision for everyone else's. ;)
